The very first list of endangered species which was given federal protection was published on March 11, 1967 under the Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966 of united States of America.

Indiana Bat – Myotis sodalis in the list of endangered Mammals, Hawaiian Dark-rumped Petrel – Pterodroma phaeopygia sandwichensis in Birds, Shortnose sturgeon – Acipenser brevirostrum in Fishes, and American Alligator – Alligator mississippiensis in reptiles were the first animals in the list to be declared endangered.
